From the day we met, during the summer between 3rd and 4th grade, in the yard between our two aunts' houses, we clicked. So many things in common, and yet so many things to learn from each other. In our friendly competition over the school years, Carla inspired me to push myself further. She started me on my lifetime love of reading. She was a wonderful companion and source of so much laughter and silliness, so many heart to heart talks, so many adventures. She and her family were like a second family to me in those growing up years. In the years since high school, between visits and some time sharing an apartment, each time we got together or chatted on the phone, the time between connections seemed to disappear. I have always been amazed and inspired by her strength and determination, and never more so than while she was facing this final challenge of cancer. I am so sad to lose her. I am so glad that she was able to embrace the beauty and joy of life even in her last months. She might say, even especially in her last months. She will always be my best friend forever.
